METI and NASA Release Version 2 ASTER Global DEM

The version 2 collection of the Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER) Global Digital Elevation Model (GDEM) was released jointly October 17, 2011 by the Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Industry (METI) of Japan and the United States National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). As with Version 1, METI and NASA are contributing the ASTER GDEM to the Global Earth Observation System of Systems (GEOSS). Consequently, the ASTER GDEM is available at no charge to users worldwide via electronic download from the Earth Remote Sensing Data Analysis Center (ERSDAC) of Japan and from NASA’s Land Processes Distributed Active Archive Center (LP DAAC).

ArcGIS Now on Android

Esri has announced the availability of ArcGIS on the Android platform:

Google Android users can now access data and mapping capabilities on their smartphones with the ArcGIS for Android application. ArcGIS for Android lets users find and share maps as well as deploy GIS data and functionality on Android devices. The free app is now available and can be downloaded directly from the Android Market.

The release of ArcGIS for Android is long awaited. Last year, Esri made ArcGIS for iOS available. Like to mobile app for Apple’s iPhone and iPad devices, the Android version serves as a “mobile gateway into the ArcGIS system.”

Η παρούσα Μελέτη Περιβαλλοντικών Επιπτώσεων (Μ.Π.Ε.) αφορά την Έγκριση Περιβαλλοντικών Όρων (Ε.Π.Ο.) για το έργο ΕΡΓΑΣΤΗΡΙΟ ΣΥΣΚΕΥΑΣΙΑΣ ΚΑΙ ΤΥΠΟΠΟΙΗΣΗΣ ΕΛΑΙΟΛΑΔΟΥ του Αγροτικού Συνεταιρισμού Μεταγγιτσίου. Εμπεριέχει όλα τα απαραίτητα δικαιολογητικά, καθώς και τα στοιχεία που ορίζονται από τον Νόμο και περιγράφονται στα αντίστοιχα κεφάλαια, βάσει της ΚΥΑ 69269/5387/90 (ΦΕΚ 678/Β/25-10-90) «Κατάταξη έργων και δραστηριοτήτων σε κατηγορίες, περιεχόμενο ΜΠΕ, καθορισμός περιεχομένου ΕΠΜ και λοιπές συναφείς διατάξεις σύμφωνα με τον Ν. 1650/86» και συγκεκριμένα βάσει του Πίνακα 3 του άρθρου 16 αυτής.

Η παρούσα Περιβαλλοντική Έκθεση αφορά την Έγκριση Περιβαλλοντικών Όρων (Ε.Π.Ο.) για το Κάμπινγκ Γ΄ κατηγορίας της Κληματσίδας Μαρίας (Camping «Λιναράκι»). Εμπεριέχει όλα τα απαραίτητα δικαιολογητικά, καθώς και τα στοιχεία που ορίζονται από τον Νόμο και περιγράφονται στα αντίστοιχα κεφάλαια (βάσει της ΚΥΑ 1661/1994 (ΦΕΚ 786/Β/20-10-94) και τον Πίνακα 3α του Παραρτήματος αυτής).

Η παρούσα τεχνική έκθεση αφορά το έργο «ΠΡΟΜΗΘΕΙΑ ΚΑΙ ΔΙΟΡΘΩΣΗ ΔΟΡΥΦΟΡΙΚΩΝ ΕΙΚΟΝΩΝ, ΔΗΜΙΟΥΡΓΙΑ ΒΑΣΗΣ ΔΕΔΟΜΕΝΩΝ, ΠΡΟΜΗΘΕΙΑ ΛΟΓΙΣΜΙΚΟΥ ΑΝΟΙΚΤΟΥ ΚΩΔΙΚΑ ΚΑΙ ΟΔΗΓΟΣ ΧΡΗΣΗΣ». Συντάσσεται με σκοπό να παρουσιαστούν όλα τα απαραίτητα στοιχεία που αφορούν την παραγγελία και διόρθωση των δορυφορικών εικόνων, τη δημιουργία ενιαίας βάσης δεδομένων (ΒΔ) για τα αγροτεμάχια, την προμήθεια λογισμικού ανοικτού κώδικά αλλά και χρήσης όλων των παραπάνω ώστε να δημιουργηθεί η απαραίτητη γεωγραφική πληροφορία (χωρική και περιγραφική πληροφορία).

Η διαδικασία έγκρισης της παρούσας μελέτης ακολουθεί τις προδιαγραφές της Υ.Α. Αριθμ. International Conservation Mapping Contest AWARDS

The Esri/SCGIS International Conservation Mapping Competition was organized to find and recognize the best conservation mapping work in the world today. We specifically used the term "mapping" in order to take in the wide variety of digital and online work that have expanded our concept of mapping well beyond static paper maps. In all we received over 100 entries representing countries and projects all over the globe. We are especially grateful to the international Society for Conservation GIS, who played a critical role in reviewing and juding all of the entries. Name Changes for ArcGIS 10.1

Among the changes planned for the early 2012 release of ArcGIS 10.1 will be the names of the various levels of the software program.  ArcView, ArcEditor, and ArcInfo are being dropped for the more self-explanatory nomenclature of ArcGIS for Desktop Basic, ArcGIS for Desktop Standard, and ArcGIS for Desktop Advanced (via APB and James Fee).  The reason for the change?  Esri explains in the Summer 2011 edition of ArcNews:“The reason for these modifications is to reinforce the fact that, regardless of where and how ArcGIS is used, it is the same system.” The new names make far better sense; I always felt the name ArcView should have been dropped when Esri deprecated its ArcView 3.x program.

In recent years, associates at Walmart have found unique ways to integrate and automate business intelligence (BI) workflows with geospatial insights. Like most organizations, associates at Walmart face the traditional obstacles in analysis and decision making: silo bottlenecks, slow data integration and processing, and tradeoffs between accuracy, speed and insight. They also have an urgent need for detailed, up-to-date reports that are easily understood, widely available and immediately actionable.

Walmart's Store Innovations & Sustainability team tackled these challenges with an open mind and the company's legendary focus on process- and cost-efficiencies. Using their existing IT infrastructure, they were able to leverage the many benefits of geographic business intelligence: “no-limits” access to data, rapid integration and processing, powerful analytics with ease-of-use, and on-demand reporting across the enterprise.

Using Near-Infrared Aerial Imagery to Inventory Oak Trees

The first ordinance passed by the California city of Santa Clarita after it was incorporated was the Oak Tree Ordinance. Thousands of oak trees cover the Santa Clarita Valley and the presence of the trees is an important part of the city’s landscape (the city logo prominently displays an oak tree). The ordinance covers oak trees of the Quercus species native to the area which includes Valley Oak, California Live Oak, Canyon Oak, Interior Live Oak, and Scrub Oak. As well as regulating the pruning, encroachment and removal of oak trees, the city sought to protect “heritage oaks” under the ordinance. Heritage oaks are the largest and oldest oaks in the city and are defined as oaks measuring at least 108 inches in circumference for a single trunk, or 72 inches in diameter for multiple trunks, at 4 1/2 feet above the ground.

Making Maps in the Dark

Aerial surveying company Bluesky International is using next generation thermal survey equipment to capture highly accurate measurements of relative heat loss from building and other structures across the UK at night. The resulting thermal maps provide municipal authorities and other organisations with intelligence with which to address fuel poverty, reduce carbon emissions and improve energy efficiency. Thermal imagery has even been used by the Police to identify properties used as cannabis factories where high temperatures are used to encourage growth.

Rachel Tidmarsh, Managing Director of Bluesky International, explores the technology that has made this possible and how this and other types of night time mapping are providing benefit.

Geocoding Shortcut: Google Maps to ArcMap

Geocoding a dataset to produce a georeferenced layer requires access to a basemap to which the location data is tied. For example, if you have a list of addresses, you will need a street file with address ranges or a parcel database with addresses in order to geolocate that list. You might also be asked to create a map showing certain locations and will be tasked with creating a dataset from scratch.

In my task, I was handed a photocopied map with handwritten notes. The task: recreate a map of England with select locales. The map (see below) had been hand marked with the desired locations. Getting a boundary layer for the United Kingdom was fairly simple but I didn’t have ready access to a layer of locations. My solution was to create a list of those locations and geocode them. Since I didn’t have a basemap I could load into ArcMap to use for the geocoding, I decided on a workaround using Batchgeo.com and Google Maps.
