Dramatic changes are taking place in the enabling computing and communication technologies that GIS relies on, and new software is leveraging these changes to evolve and transform GIS and our user community. Esri is working hard and is in the process of releasing many new capabilities in ArcGIS 10.2, such as real-time data integration, online analysis tools, spatial analysis in the cloud, location analytics, new templates and apps, and web story maps for everyone. There are also new capabilities enabling new opportunities for developers. These advances are giving rise to a change in the very way we position GIS, from a software system designed to unlock the power of geographic information to a comprehensive platform that promises to transform your work; your organization; and, ultimately, our world.

ArcGIS For Home Use Program

ArcGIS for Home Use makes GIS available to everyone. This offer is ideal for existing ArcGIS users who want to use the same powerful software at home for noncommercial personal use and for individuals who want to expand their GIS skills. However, anyone can participate in this program.

 

 

Name Changes for ArcGIS 10.1

Among the changes planned for the early 2012 release of ArcGIS 10.1 will be the names of the various levels of the software program.  ArcView, ArcEditor, and ArcInfo are being dropped for the more self-explanatory nomenclature of ArcGIS for Desktop Basic, ArcGIS for Desktop Standard, and ArcGIS for Desktop Advanced (via APB and James Fee).  The reason for the change?  Esri explains in the Summer 2011 edition of ArcNews:“The reason for these modifications is to reinforce the fact that, regardless of where and how ArcGIS is used, it is the same system.” The new names make far better sense; I always felt the name ArcView should have been dropped when Esri deprecated its ArcView 3.x program.

Geocoding Shortcut: Google Maps to ArcMap

Geocoding a dataset to produce a georeferenced layer requires access to a basemap to which the location data is tied. For example, if you have a list of addresses, you will need a street file with address ranges or a parcel database with addresses in order to geolocate that list. You might also be asked to create a map showing certain locations and will be tasked with creating a dataset from scratch.

In my task, I was handed a photocopied map with handwritten notes. The task: recreate a map of England with select locales. The map (see below) had been hand marked with the desired locations. Getting a boundary layer for the United Kingdom was fairly simple but I didn’t have ready access to a layer of locations. My solution was to create a list of those locations and geocode them. Since I didn’t have a basemap I could load into ArcMap to use for the geocoding, I decided on a workaround using Batchgeo.com and Google Maps.

ArcGIS Game Extension! (Fifteen Puzzle 1.0)

Στην παρούσα εργασία, παρουσιάζονται οι μέθοδοι παρεμβολής (INTERPOLATION TECHNIQUES) που συμπεριλαμβάνονται σε λογισμικά των Γεωγραφικών Συστημάτων Πληροφοριών (GIS), καθώς επίσης γίνεται μια προσπάθεια χρήσης αυτών σε δεδομένα που αφορούν τη δασική επιστήμη και πιο συγκεκριμένα τη δασική διαχειριστική. Το λογισμικό GIS που χρησιμοποιήθηκε είναι το ArcGIS Desktop 9.3 (έκδοση Arc Info – Evaluation Edition) της εταιρείας ESRI.
